A palavra “neocolonialismo” é um termo usado para definir a colonização europeia em regiões da Ásia e, principalmente, da África a partir do século XIX. Indica um novo processo de colonização, tendo em vista que países europeus já haviam colonizado outras regiões, com destaque para a América, a partir dos séculos XV e XVI. Quando diz-se que as fronteiras africanas foram herdadas do neocolonialismo, é porque não foram respeitados os limites e os territórios das populações africanas e suas organizações políticas antes da presença e da administração europeia na região. As fronteiras foram herdadas das divisões políticas propostas pelos Estados europeus que dividiram a África em possessões próprias ao longo do século XIX, como ocorrido durante a Conferência de Berlim, entre os anos de 1884 e 1885, por exemplo.
